Colorful standouts

I'm as guilty as anyone of wearing too much black and grey, but I do appreciate the transformative effects of color. Jcrew has made a very successful business of selling basics, and the past few years have added a lot more fashion forward pieces to its line. One of the things I especially like about their offerings is the variety of classic yet unique colors that they utilize. Below are some of the few I've found that I think actually look better in color than basic black.

$30 and under deals

I always like clothes to be a little more than basic, either with eye-catching 3-D details or an unusual shape that goes beyond your standard t-shirt shape or button up. Even better when you can find these pieces for $30 and under. Below are several tops that fit the bill, all with designs that look like they came out of a specialty boutique. I also found a scarf at TopShop that can instantly transform any plain old blouse or t-shirt.

Day to night embellishments

I always like a little sparkle, but it's a fine line between pretty and pre-teen glitter addiction. It's nice when a piece of clothing can feature a little extra detail to make it special, yet are equally appropriate for day or evening. I've found a few such items that would look just as great with jeans as they would with a dressier skirt.

The two beautiful tops above have a great 1920's art deco feel. Gorgeous, delicate beading complements the unique shapes of the blouses and makes them very ethereal.

The description of this cardigan says it all, the sequins really do 'peek-a-boo' out from the placket. A clever way to sneak a little shine into an otherwise basic sweater.

A built in necklace instantly takes care of any accessory issues on this Robert Rodriguez piece. I also like how the bow on the shoulder nicely ties the 'necklace' and top together.

Foldover handbags

I've never been one to carry a huge bag, though every once in awhile I do like a little more space to stow a book or a bottle of water. Convertible bags are great in that they expand when necessary or can be made into a much more manageable clutch size when you just want to stash your wallet and cell phone. I've found a few that look great either fully extended or folded up into half the size. These also look like completely different handbags in their different states, so it's as if you are getting two bags for the price of one!

Statement bracelets

Statement necklaces are everywhere, and as a logical extension, I figure statement bracelets deserve a look. Colorful and ornate jewelery is always great paired with solid colored apparel. Chunky bracelets especially go well with pieces that have a high neckline and minimal detailing. Below are a few combinations I've put together, where in the top two the bracelet adds a pop of color and in the bottom two pairings, the bracelet adds a shiny monochromatic accent.

Stylish style carriers

I just got back from a wonderful and relaxing vacation, where (gasp!) fashion wasn't a high priority because the natural landscape called for much more utilitarian apparel to enjoy all the outdoor activities available. It's good to take a break once in a while. As usual, waiting in the baggage claim area made me wish that my luggage wasn't another black bag in a sea of black bags. So I've actively sought out suitcases and travelers with spot-from-a-mile-away patterns, but still not totally tacky.
All luggage are available on ebags.com.

Hurts your eyes a little, but you definitely won't miss this suitcase. There is something very hypnotizing about this pattern.

Pretty roses in muted tones make this bag elegant, but still unique.

A tropical printed suitcase like this one reminds me of where I dream of living one day.

So cool, a piece of art to take with you wherever you travel to.

Beautifully detailed in a rich red color, this bag is luxurious and infinitely more interesting than any logo bag.
